2-Part FEED YOUR MIND Series exploring the tumultuous and controversial history of the Otero Mesa in southeast New Mexico with speaker Bill Key. The dates and time of this 2-part seminar series are Monday evenings April 8 and April 15 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Refreshments are available 1/2 hour before class time.
In the words of historian, Leon Metz, Rancher John Prather did what Indians, Mexican Bandits, and two European wars could never do. Without firing a shot he forced the Army to back down.
This incident occurred over sixty years ago. The Cold war was hot and our missile defense system was in its infant stage. The Army didn’t know where its developmental missiles would land. This forced them to annex a large of portion of land.
This is all in the past. All the lead up to the incident, aftermath, and, Prather’s homestead as used now will be discussed.
And after all this the Otero Mesa’s future is still in doubt as different groups clamor for its use.
