Las Cruces, NM — The Doña Ana Arts Council proudly presents Little Theaters of the Heart, a vibrant and emotionally layered solo exhibition by internationally distinguished Taiwanese artist Chiung Fang Chang, curated by Natalia Martinez, Gallery Manager and Curator at the Council. The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday, June 6th, from 6 to 8 PM at the Doña Ana Arts Council Gallery in Downtown Las Cruces.

Spanning work created between 2022 and 2025, Little Theaters of the Heart is a visual diary of Chang’s evolving identity since moving to the United States. Drawing from a background shaped by disciplined academic training, Chang’s current body of work signals a personal and creative release—embracing expressive spontaneity, bright forms, and unfiltered emotion as a new language of belonging. Her aesthetic may evoke comparisons to Jean-Michel Basquiat, yet it speaks in a voice all her own: one rooted in quiet observation, cultural dislocation, and the vivid inner world of a young immigrant artist.

Curator Natalia Martinez describes Chang’s work as “a new age of Basquiat-esque expression—untraditional, playful, and profoundly shaped by a youthful Asian female identity. It’s at once fearless and intimate, telling a story that many will feel but few have seen so vividly rendered.”

Featuring mixed-media paintings, prints, and sculpture, the exhibition explores themes of displacement, resilience, and transformation. With recurring imagery of cacti, creatures, and ephemeral figures, Chang constructs a dreamlike landscape that captures both the emotional solitude of migration and the fierce joy of reclaiming one’s voice.

This is a rare opportunity to experience the emergence of an artist whose work bridges cultural experience with deeply personal storytelling—offering both poetic introspection and dazzling color.
